72-year-old arrested for Big Spring hit-and-run in February

After about a month of investigating, BSPD arrested 72-year-old Akmal Ilyas in Midland for serious bodily injury and failure to stop and render aid.

BIG SPRING, Texas — The Big Spring Police Department has released an update on a hit-and-run investigation that started in February. On Thursday, 72-year-old Akmal Ilyas was arrested for accident involving serious bodily injury and not stopping and rendering aid.

NewsWest 9 reported that on Feb. 13 a 48-year-old man was pushing a motorcycle westbound on the E I-20 South Service Road. The man was then allegedly hit by what was believed to be a red Kenworth truck tractor. The driver failed to stop and render aid and left the scene, according to police. The victim was taken to UMC Lubbock due to his injuries.

Since then, several subpoenas were served and a search warrant was executed at Resilient Oil Field Services in Midland. Big Spring police were assisted by the Midland County Sheriff's Office.

After the investigation, on Thursday, Ilyas was arrested for accident involving serious bodily injury and not stopping and rendering aid.

Ilyas was booked into the Midland County jail and is awaiting arraignment.

As of Thursday, the victim is still in the UMC Lubbock hospital in stable condition.
