Skywarn meetings still taking place through April

Jordan Frazier spoke at the Skywarn meeting Wednesday night to explain how you could help NewsWest 9 gather accurate weather information.

LAMESA, Texas — It's severe weather season and folks are learning how to be storm spotters.

Skywarn is a volunteer program with almost 290,000 trained severe weather spotters. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service.

NewsWest 9 Chief Meteorologist Jordan Frazier was at the Skywarn meeting in Lamesa Wednesday night. Frazier spoke a little bit about what Skywarn is and how you could help NewsWest 9 gather accurate weather data.

"I got to meet with a lot of the great people of the community as we continue the Skywarn series, making sure that you guys are informed and that you can help submit more of the data to myself, NewsWest 9 and the National Weather Service. So that we can help make more accurate forecasts for you," said Frazier.

"So, if you were unable to make it out to the meeting last night or if the list of meetings might not go through your city, try and check out the advanced Skywarn virtual training tomorrow (Friday). That’s going to be at 6:30 p.m.," Frazier said. "Of course, it’s going to be for a little bit more advanced users, but please go ahead and check it out."

"More of these meetings are going to continue to take place across West Texas and the Permian Basin," Frazier said. "If you want to meet with people from the National Weather Service or your local news station, myself, Dan [Grigsby] and Aurora [Murray] are going to be out at more of the meetings coming up."
