Congress pledges $3.5 billion toward new spacesuits

NASA is hoping the suits are ready for use in the next three years, which will be just in time for the first person of color and the first woman to walk on the moon.

HOUSTON — New astronaut spacesuits are coming soon.

Congress announced that it's willing to spend up to $3.5 billion on new suits that will fit men and women better.

NASA announced that Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace will design and develop the spacesuits. They'll be used by astronauts on the International Space Station as well as during lunar landings.

Axiom is a Houston-based company and it's already working on the suits, which will provide increased flexibility.

Collins Aerospace, out of North Carolina, is testing out prototypes that are less bulky than the current suits.

The goal is to have the suits ready for use in the next three years, which will be just in time for the first person of color and the first woman to walk on the moon.
