Western New York man who was in New York City describes Friday's earthquake

Oswaldo Mestre, Jr., said he was on a Zoom call on the 15th floor of a New York City building when the earthquake happened Friday.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Western New York man said he didn't expect to experience an earthquake while on the 15th floor of a 32-floor building Friday in New York City.

"Initially, I thought it was wind, but it seemed stronger than that," Oswaldo Mestre, Jr., the City of Buffalo executive director of Citizen Services, told 2 On Your Side. "I'm familiar with taking the train system, I thought that might be it.

"But I'm like, I'm in a building that has 32 floors, and I'm on the 15th floor, and I'm like, that's not it. Then it was sustained for maybe I would say, about eight or 10 seconds, but... the building kind of shook, and I realized that it wasn't the wind, it was a earthquake."

Mestre said he was on a Zoom call when the building he was in started shaking Friday.

This was the second earthquake he's ever experienced, with the first being the one that hit West Seneca last year.
