One man was shot multiple times and killed, Wednesday night, after a shooting at an Odessa apartment complex.
The deadly shooting happened at the Acacia Place apartments on Oakwood Dr. near JBS Parkway, just south of the UTPB campus. NewsWest 9 spoke with witnesses who heard gunshots and saw the victim on the ground. Police say the suspect is still on the run.
Police arrived on scene around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday night after several people in the apartment complex began making 9-1-1 calls. When police got there, they found a victim lying on the ground with several gunshot wounds.
An Acacia Place resident who wished to remain anonymous, said, "I was in my room and I heard multiple gunshots. Whenever I came out and looked out the window, I could see people running, so I came outside and I saw somebody laying down on the ground, and so I immediately just called 9-1-1".
Witnesses say several people also tried to administer CPR and first aid to the victim as they were waiting for emergency crews to make it on scene.
Police tell us the victim, who has been identified as Brandon Russell, 24, of El Paso, was transported to Medical Center Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Authorities are now investigating the case as a homicide.
Cpl. Steve LeSueur, PIO for the Odessa Police Department, sent out a press release stating that the shooter is has been identified as Khalifah Ibn Muhammad, 29. Based on the facts and circumstances presented during the investigation, a warrant was obtained for Muhammad, for Murder "1st Degree Felony". Police are asking that people use caution if approached by Muhammad as he is considered to be armed and dangerous. Muhammad is described as a black male, approximately 5'11", and approximately 165 lbs. The victim's identity will released once next of kin has been notified.
NewsWest 9 spoke with one UTPB student who was shocked that this happened just feet away from his school and home.
UTPB student Conner Hall, said, "I actually have a couple of friends who live in these apartments, and one professor that I know that lives in these apartments, so I'm kind of concerned about them. I was just going back to my apartment and UTPB sent out an alert, saying that there was a shooting South of campus and that we needed to be cautious and look for any strange activity, and lock our doors. I've only lived in Odessa for a year now and this is probably the most dangerous thing that I've seen since I've been here."
