The Midland community comes together to help a homeowner fix up a house

The Midland Rotary Club and the Christmas in Action had teamed up to help fix up a home.

MIDLAND, Texas —

It’s not uncommon for people to look at their house and see it could use a touch up or even a huge overhaul.

But not every homeowner has the ability or the means to do work on their home.

That’s where groups like Midland Rotary Club and Christmas in Action can step in to help.

“Rotarians likes to think of themselves as people of action. And so, what's beautiful about Rotary is your local clubs will take on multiple charity events. One of the charity events is, as we're talking, is Christmas in action and why we love doing this so much is because it helps. It helps individuals in the community, right? And so that's what we're about is trying to help the community,” said Andrew Mellen, President Elect for the Midland Rotary Club.

Christmas in action is a non-profit that helps out homeowners with any home repairs or anything else they might need done that they aren't able to do themselves and every year the rotary club helps them out with one home.

Jim Morris, treasurer for Christmas in Action, has been doing Christmas in Action for over 40 years and doesn’t plan to stop anytime soon. For others like him in the organization, just getting to help others is its own reward.

“I can speak personally for me, I'm a CPA. And by April 15th, I'm brain dead. I'm just totally exhausted mentally. And for me to come out and for 7-8 days, [I] get physically exhausted but mentally recharged, it's healing.” said Morris.

Morris says that it’s common for people who have been helped to pay it forward and turn around and help out Christmas in Action with other homes.

“Because if they had the opportunity, if they was, you know, good enough to come out and, you know, waste, you know, use their time to help me get my house together as soon as this is over, I'm gonna find out if I can get with them when they do the next house so I can go and help support the next person.” said Calvin Ray Lee, the homeowner being helped out today.

Both the Rotary Club and Christmas in Action will be working on Lee's home for a week.
