Eddie Martinez's charge upgraded to murder after James Lara-Salazar dies in a Lubbock hospital

On May 30, Mr. Lara-Salazar died due to several gunshot wounds sustained during a shooting on May 25 in the 2000 block of North Kingsley in Hobbs.

HOBBS, N.M. — The Hobbs Police Department has upgraded 19-year-old Eddie Martinez's charge from aggravated assault with a deadly weapon to murder after 18-year-old James Lara-Salazar died in a Lubbock hospital on Thursday. Mr. Lara-Salazar was suffering from several gunshot wounds that stemmed from a shooting on May 25 in the 2000 block of North Kingsley Dr.

According to Hobbs PD, along North Kingsley Dr., officers found Mr. Lara-Salazar suffering from several gunshot wounds. Hobbs PD performed life-saving measures on Mr. Lara-Salazar until EMS arrived. Lara-Salazar was transported to Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital and flown to a Lubbock area hospital where he later died. 

Hobbs Police Department arrested Martinez Wednesday in relation to the shooting.

Martinez has been charged and arrested for tampering with evidence and murder.

An investigation is still ongoing.
