Midland Development Corporation agrees to lease 125 acres to aerospace defense company

On Tuesday, the interim lease agreement with Castelion was approved by the MDC. The company expects to use the site for ground testing and rocket motor production.

MIDLAND, Texas — On April 23, the Midland Development Corporation agreed to lease 125 of its acres to Castelion Corporation, a defense company based out of California.

According to the Executive Director of the MDC Sara Harris, this is an agreement for the company to utilize land owned by the MDC on a 24-month basis as an interim location.

Harris said the location is west of Midland city limits. During Thursday's meeting, a presentation showed the portion of land is near Highway 191.

Castelion's Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer Sean Pitt said the site will be used for ground testing and rocket motor production.

NewsWest 9 confirmed with Pitt that the company will not be flying anything in Midland during this time period.

In terms of job creation, Harris said the site in Midland is an interim step for Castelion.

"There is a secondary location that will be permanent, and it includes really substantial job creation and capital investment," Harris said. "That will be phase two of the project."

According to Pitt, the next phase would create manufacturing jobs in Midland.

Harris said there's already engine testing ongoing at this portion of land owned by the MDC in reference to Firehawk Aerospace.

"Firehawk Aerospace has been testing rocket engines on this property in an adjacent area for almost two years now without incident," said Harris.
