Stolen vehicle leads to high-speed pursuit in Winkler County

WINKLER COUNTY, Texas — A man from Hobbs, New Mexico will be facing charges after leading officers on a chase.

The Winkler County Sheriff's Office said on Wednesday, March 20, at around 7:38 p.m., deputies received notification of a stolen vehicle, a black 2023 Ford F-150 that had entered Winkler County from Jal, New Mexico, on North State Highway 18.

Deputies R. Cogburn and N. Barlow found the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle failed to yield, which led to a pursuit. 

The chase continued down South Pine before heading westbound on Campbell.

The F-150 then proceeded onto Austin Street, reaching speeds of 70 mph.

An additional unit, Deputy Gallagher joined the pursuit as it continued northbound on North State Highway 115, with the vehicle driving over 100 miles per hour. 

Before entering Andrews County, an ACSO deputy deployed spike strips at the intersection of State Highway 115 and FM 181, causing the stolen vehicle’s tire to deflate. 

The pursuit persisted for an additional two miles before coming to a stop. The driver of the F-150 was identified as Andres Miguel Soto, a 26-year-old from Hobbs, NM, who was reportedly on probation.

There were no reported injuries or property damage. 

Soto will face the following charges: evading arrest/detention with a vehicle, as well as unauthorized use of a vehicle.
