HOBBS, N.M. — New Mexico State Police have arrested 40-year-old Michael Pineda after he "refused" to stop at a DWI checkpoint just outside of Hobbs.
The incident occurred on Dec. 28 on US 62/180.
According to NMSP, a Nissan pickup truck approached the checkpoint at a high rate of speed.
Officers attempted to get the driver’s attention and have him slow down, but the driver did not and drove through the checkpoint.
NMSP say they conducted a pursuit and used tire deflation devices (stop sticks) to stop the truck. After the "stop sticks" were used successfully, the driver of the truck did not stop.
A pursuit intervention technique was utilized, according to officials, and brought the truck to a stop.
The driver, identified as Pineda, exited the truck and fled on foot. Officers caught up to Pineda and detained him.
After sobriety tests were performed, Pineda was placed under arrest for aggravated DWI. Pineda was also charged with aggravated assault upon a peace officer, resisting evading an officer and battery upon a peace officer.
