BIG SPRING, Texas — The Big Spring Police Department says a man has been charged Tuesday with the murder of his grandmother back on Dec. 27.
According to BSPD, 67-year-old Leah Hughes was found deceased at her residence in the 1800 block of Brent Dr.
Big Spring officers responded to the scene and conducted an investigation. After conducting the investigation, BSPD believed that the cause of Hughes' death was of a "fall causing injury." An autopsy was requested.
On Dec. 29, medical examiners told BSPD Criminal Investigations Division that Hughes died because of a gunshot wound. Big Spring officers then immediately secured a search warrant for the Hughes residence and conducted an investigation into her death.
After working the investigation for the past several weeks and gaining help from multiple agencies, BSPD CID arrested a man who they suspect killed Leah Hughes.
On Feb. 6, 26-year-old Colten Hughes, the grandson of Leah Hughes, was arrested and charged with murder after BSPD CID conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Parkview Dr. and Durango Dr. in Trophy Club, TX, about four hours away from Big Spring.
Hughes' bond sits at $2,000,000 as of Thursday.
