Best Friends Animal Society discusses life-saving efforts for Odessa shelters

Odessa Animal Shelter is the 4th highest killing shelter in the state of Texas, according to Grassroots Advocacy.

ODESSA, Texas — Animal advocates are raising awareness for animal euthanasia in Odessa.

On Monday, Best Friends Animal Society held a press conference to discuss changes to life-saving efforts within the Odessa Animal Shelter.

According to Grassroots Advocacy, they claim that the Odessa Animal Shelter is the 4th highest killing shelter in the state of Texas. They also say that cats are being killed at a higher rate.

Grassroots Advocacy addressed findings of Odessa animal welfare and support needed for animal services.

"The data that Odessa Animal Services is saving only 37.5% of their animals entering the shelter. Our community polls show that the citizens in Odessa want more from their shelter, they want taxpayer dollars to be spent saving rather than killing them so we're offering support to save more lives together," said Sophia Proler, south regional director of Best Friends Animal Society. "So we're launching a campaign 'Odessa Deserves Better' that is locally supported and we're here to help make those connections in the community to save more animals together."
