ODESSA, Texas — Students from UTPB STEM Academy made a big splash Wednesday morning at the school's 9th Annual Boat Race.
They only had two days to build their boat out of two materials, card board and duct tape.
On Wednesday, they competed against other grade levels and even the teachers.
For the first time, former graduates were invited back to race and reflect on their earlier years.
"The boat races teach you some skills that are super important. They teach you teamwork, they teach you time constraints and they are a heck of a lot of fun," said Allison Barnes, a 2023 UTPB STEM Academy graduate. "I was really excited to get to come back and to race again as a former student because it's one of my favorite parts of my school year and that close-knit community that STEM fosters keeps going even after we graduate."
Every year the students learn to make their boats better, but some believe it's only fun if you sink.
