ECTOR COUNTY, Texas — Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper Kevin Ramirez Vasquez was investigating a crash site on Sept. 17 along State Highway 302 in Ector County when he was hit by a Cadillac.
Trooper Vasquez was taken to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa to be treated for his injuries. Then, he was airlifted to a Lubbock area hospital.
A week and a half later, while still in the ICU in Lubbock, Trooper Vasquez lost his life. He was 25 years old.
“There are no words to ease the loss of one of our brothers in uniform,” DPS Director Steven McCraw said on Saturday. “Texas Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Alexis Ramirez Vasquez served this state honorably to his very last breath. His commitment to keeping the roads safe, protecting the people of Texas and the sacrifice he made will never be forgotten."
Trooper Vasquez began his career in law enforcement when he joined DPS in 2023. He was stationed in Odessa.
He also served in the United States Army and was currently serving in the National Guard.
According to DPS on Saturday, Trooper Vasquez was the 241st DPS officer to die in the line of duty since 1823.
Trooper Vasquez passed away with his family beside him.
The DPS state trooper decided to donate his organs to help others.
