SANTA FE (AP) - State Department of Public Safety records show more than 7,000 people have received permits to carry concealed weapons in New Mexico.

In 2004, more than 1,100 residents statewide had the permits.

Governor Richardson signed legislation in 2003 allowing qualified New Mexicans to carry concealed weapons.

To receive a permit, an applicant must pass a criminal background check, submit fingerprints and complete a training course with an approved instructor.
