Windy with a Warmup for the Weekend | West Texas Forecast

It seems like the winds are not letting up this week as southerly winds bring in warm temperatures, but they are not coming in gently.

TONIGHT: The region can expect a beautiful day with warm weather and clear skies. Mid-level ridging near the Rocky Mountains will lead to clear skies and slightly warmer temperatures compared to yesterday, reaching near normal highs in the mid 70s to low 80s for most areas. Tonight, a shortwave trough passing through the northern Great Plains will induce lee troughing and a low-level jet over the southern Great Plains, keeping temperatures relatively mild with lows in the upper 40s to low 50s.

TOMORROW: Moving into Friday, the mid-level ridge axis shifts eastward and a low-level thermal ridge spreads across the region, resulting in temperatures soaring about 10 to 15 degrees above normal, reaching the 80s and even some 90s along the Rio Grande Valley. Despite some high clouds, the warm trend continues into Friday night, with temperatures remaining mild. Enjoy the warm and sunny weather!

IN COMING DAYS: Saturday will bring well above normal temperatures to Southeast New Mexico and West Texas due to southwesterly flow aloft. Highs are expected in the 80s for most areas, with 90s along the Rio Grande. Winds will be less windy compared to Friday due to weak subsidence. However, Sunday will see increased winds as a trough to the west develops, bringing markedly stronger winds, especially west of the Pecos River. Despite a cirrus shield limiting mixing and warmth, Sunday remains the warmest day, with widespread highs in the middle to upper 80s, possibly reaching 90s in some areas. Sunday night will be mild with southwesterly winds and high clouds. Monday will see the trough moving eastward, bringing windy conditions and a cooler air mass, with highs ranging from the upper 60s to 80s. A cold front on Tuesday will lead to a northerly wind shift and below-normal temperatures in the 60s and 70s. The extended forecast remains dry, with only a low probability of showers and thunderstorms late Monday and Tuesday.
