1-year-old from Hobbs killed in single-vehicle crash

According to a report released by DPS, the car veered off the roadway and collided with a fence and a utility pole.

MARTIN COUNTY, Texas — A child is dead and two others are injured after a single-vehicle crash in Martin County.

According to the initial report released by DPS, Rene Gonzalez-Martinez, 27, of Hobbs was driving a car eastbound on SH 349 in Martin County.

At around 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 16, the car veered off the south side of the roadway, colliding with a fence and a utility pole.

Gonzalez-Martinez and a 29-year-old woman, also from Hobbs, were transported to Midland Memorial Hospital where they are reportedly stable.

A 1-year-old child succumbed to his injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to DPS, the child did not have a seat belt on at the time of the crash.

No further information is available at this time and DPS is still investigating the crash.
