GREENWOOD: A disturbing crime is being investigated in Greenwood. A 17-year-old man and a 62-year-old man were both charged with sexual assault of a child. According to court documents, they both raped the same young girl who is under the age of 14.

"That is extremely shocking and sad that something like this would happen," a Greenwood resident, said.

"It's really baffling and sickening," another Greenwood resident, said.

Residents NewsWest 9 spoke with in Greenwood wanted to remain anonymous but said they're shocked that something so disturbing would happen in their small town.

17-year-old Gary Shane Compton and 62-year-old James Dudley Staggs have been charged with multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault to a child. On top of that, Staggs was also charged with four counts of indecency with a child by sexual contact.

"It just really concerns me. Just really concerns me for the younger children out here. It actually terrifies me," one resident said.

Greenwood ISD said Compton used to attend Greenwood High School.

According to Midland County Jail records, both Compton and Staggs live in the same home in Greenwood at 2504 SCR 1058. Both of the men are accused of sodomizing the same young girl under the age of 14. Police were notified after the girl told her school counselor about the incidents.

"One's an adult and we're talking school kids. Hopefully, the law will step in and they'll both get the punishment they deserve," a resident said.

Compton has bonded out of jail. If convicted he and Staggs are facing five to 99 years behind bars and a $20,000. Staggs will also be facing two to 20 years behind bars and an additional $20,000 fine for his indecency charges.

"I understand that it happens everywhere but this is ridiculous to be in this small community," one resident said.

"I mean we aren't crime free out here but it's a lot less than other towns. So that's astonishing to hear that," a resident said.
