WASHINGTON — The party is just starting for the Washington D.C. players who won the National Women's Soccer League Championship in Louisville, Ky. on Saturday.
The Washington Spirit won against the Chicago Red Stars 2-1 in extra time.
The team is expected to return to the D.C. area early Sunday afternoon via a charter flight, landing at Washington-Dulles International Airport.
On Twitter, the women of the team celebrated their win with "all the feels."
Congratulations from D.C. sports stars started coming in once the club had won the title.
Spirit defender Kelley O'Hara was exuberant in her tweet celebrating the club's win.
Former Washington Spirit player Joanna Lohman congratulated her former teammates with a festive cheer.
D.C. United soccer player Paul Arriola tweeted "Overcoming adversity with pure resilience & bravery! Well deserved!"
From ice hockey, Washington Capitals Captain Alex Ovechkin congratulated the team, tweeting "You took the biggest step!"
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser congratulated the team via a Tweet following the win, tweeting "They don't call us the #DistrictOfChampions for nothing!"
President Joe Biden also congratulated the Spirit, with the team tweeting back a request, "White House trip soon?"
