MITCHELL COUNTY, TX (KWES) - The Texas Rangers are investigating a fatal shooting that took place near mile marker 201 on I-20 in Mitchell County on April 18.

According to the Department of Public Safety, two people were shot just before 7 a.m. on Thursday. One of the victims died while the other was transported to Hendrick Medical Center.

KTXS reported that family identified the deceased victim as Noppol Pantiyanurak, 56, a truck driver from California. DPS reportedly told the family they believe Pantiyanurak pulled over on the road after a car began flashing his lights.

Both Pantiyanurak and his driving partner were shot.

The suspect is Brandon Christopher Mardid, 20, of Odessa. He was taken into custody at the scene and was booked into the Mitchell County Jail.

Madrid has been charged with murder, aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bonds total $700,000.

KTXS says a trooper discovered the murder when he stopped for what appeared to be a motorist in need of assistance.
