HOWARD COUNTY - Howard County got a visit on Thursday from the Texas Comptroller's Office.

They called in all of the local leaders from superintendents, directors, and city managers to meet at the Howard County Courthouse.

In the meeting, the county was presented with the Texas Comptroller Gold Leadership Circle Award.

This award recognizes Howard County for setting the bar of financial transparency and opening the books to the public.

Meaning they are providing citizens with a friendly way of sharing the financial information online.

"I think it's part of the democracy. Public officials make decisions on how to spend the public's money. They should be accountable to the public and they should know what they are doing from the public," Bob Ashton, with the State Comptroller's Office, said.

Some of the other topics that they were able to discuss were local sales tax, stimulus money and grants available to the county.
