ODESSA - With the housing crunch the Basin is facing, some homeowners are taking advantage of the opportunity by renting out rooms in their homes.
Gloria Craig is just one of many local homeowners that are renting out rooms to those in desperate need of finding one, she says most of her inquiries have come from as far as Alabama. She says she fears some individuals might take advantage of this and gauge the prices of renting out a room.
"The prices are so high people want to gauge. You would think that they would give someone the opportunity and not try to break them in the process," Craig said.
Sgt. Clements with the Midland Police Department says once you start taking money to rent a room you become a landlord and under Texas law you must follow some rules and regulations.
"Things that they have to comply with as a landlord to foresee money for a room and that can be as small as just one room in your house," Clements said.
Law enforcement tells NewsWest 9 if you do plan to rent a room, there are some safety precautions you should consider and one of them is to do a background check.
"Doing complete background checks on the people that are coming in. There are several Internet companies but you need to check to make sure they're not sex offenders," Clements said.
Gloria does require a background check and she says so far no one has complained about it. However, she does have a word of advice for homeowners who are thinking of renting out a room.
