MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and the Texas Department of Transportation is using this as a chance to draw attention to the epidemic that is killing thousands of people each year.
In this day in age, most of us have smart phones making it easy to call, text, email or update social media while we're behind the wheel.
But Texas Department of Transportation reports those actions increase crash risk.
"Talk, Text, Crash" is a public education campaign that TXDOT is promoting throughout the month of April.
The initiative aims to remind drivers in the Lone Star State to put away their phones while driving.
Texas Department of Transportation is also reminding drivers something as simple as changing the radio station while driving can lead to serious injury or death.
At NewsWest 9, we're hosting a "Wait to Text Campaign" which goes hand in hand with the "Talk, Text, Crash" campaign.
You can a orange thumb bands by visiting the NewsWest 9 studios during business hours or you can pick up your thumb band at Lisa Copeland Nationwide Insurance located at Grandview and 52nd Street in Odessa.
It's a helpful tool to remind you not to text and drive.
