Two dogs killed, homeowner injured by swarm of africanized bees

The Midland homeowner went outside to check on his dogs because he thought they were fighting. Little did he know they were being attacked by a swarm of bees and he would be the next victim.

MIDLAND, TX (KWES) - The Midland homeowner went outside to check on his dogs because he thought they were fighting. Little did he know they were being attacked by a swarm of bees and he would be the next victim.

James Roy is recovering today after being stung more than 50 times. His dogs were not as lucky. Both passed away at the vet after being stung more than 1,000 times.

When Roy went outside his home Thursday in the 2300 block of Princeton around 3 p.m., he saw the bees attacking his two dogs. His white dog looked black because she was fully covered in bees.

"He opened the door and a swarm of bees just came towards him," said Alan Roy, the homeowner's son.

The swarm attacked him and he ran for help.

"Luckily, there were some neighbors there and some contractors that were able to wash him down. with the water hose trying to get the bees off," said Alan.

The family is now mourning the loss of their two dogs, Susie and Sammy. They were rescued not even a year ago.

Bee Busters Inc. came out to investigate the what caused the attack, but only found a colony of docile European bees in the backyard. The attack may have been brought on by the Africanized bees trying to take over the colony.

"They were looking for a home. They were trying to set up here and that caused a feud," said Tim Cleverdon, owner of Bee Busters Inc.

Experts say they swarm voluntarily or if they are forced out of their colony.

"If you see bees flying around the roof line. There's no food up there. They are probably looking for a place to set up," said Cleverdon.

There is no prevention for this type of bee, but you should avoid large groups and call in an expert to deal with hives.

"If a bee attacks you, go as far as you can the opposite direction. That's the only way for them to stop. As fast as you can," said Alan.

Alan says his dad his is recovering well, but he wont even step foot in the backyard in fear of being stung.
