Tire fire in West Odessa mostly contained, fire crews hitting hot spots

A fire that started this afternoon on the 2700 block of Buckskin Rd. in a pile of tires has been mostly contained.

WEST ODESSA, TX (KWES) - A fire that started this afternoon on the 2700 block of Buckskin Rd. in a pile of tires has been mostly contained.

Dispatch says firefighters are still on the scene, but are hitting hot spots.

West Odessa Volunteer Fire Department, Goldsmith Volunteer Fire Department, South Ector Volunteer Fire Department, and Odessa Fire and Rescue all responded to the scene.

The fire started around 3 p.m. in a large pile of tires.

The City of Odessa says the blaze was difficult to fight due to strong winds. No residential areas were threatened and no injuries have been reported.

Thick smoke could be seen miles away from the blaze.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area from University near 866 to allow first responders access to the scene.

West Odessa residents east of Highway 866 that are affected by smoke are encouraged to stay indoors.

Close all windows, doors, fire place dampers and exterior vents. They can also use towels, plastic sheeting or duct tape to seal cracks around doors, windows and vents.
