ODESSA, Texas — Parishioners of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church are mourning the loss of one of their deacons.

Deacon Manuel Luevano was involved in a hit-and-run accident on March 4.

Four male subjects burglarized the Smokers Outlet on 51st and Dixie before fleeing the scene. The suspects ran a stop sign and struck Luevano, who was transported to Medical Center Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Luevano spent two months at the hospital before succumbing to his injuries.

Luevano served as a deacon at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Odessa for 20 years before being transferred to Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.

"It's quite a loss for both of our communities," said Father Mark Woodruff, a pastor at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.

"He attended daily mass here at Saint Elizabeth's cause he lives in this parish and, in fact, he was on his way to mass, morning mass, the day the accident occured."

Odessa police say they are still investigating the hit and run and no arrests have been made. Anyone with information in reference to this investigation is encouraged to contact the Odessa Police Department or Odessa Crime Stoppers at 432-333-TIPS.
