MONDAY, APRIL 12: Nearly 70,000 people have contracted COVID-19 in East Texas; death toll passes 1,700

SMITH COUNTY, Texas — As of Monday, April 12, at 9 a.m. 66,423 people have contracted COVID-19 in East Texas since the pandemic began.

Of that total number, 41,013 patients have recovered and 1,775 patients have died from coronavirus-related complications.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Some counties are not reporting recoveries or are reporting them irregularly. This could also be due to people who test positive not retesting to show they're negative for COVID-19 after they recover.

Below is a full list of COVID-19 stats in East Texas:

  • Anderson County - 4,788, 2,365 recoveries, 73 deaths
  • Angelina County - 4,564, 1,769 recoveries, 108 deaths
  • Bowie County -  4,513, 664 recoveries, 108 deaths 
  • Camp County -  790, 180 recoveries, 16 deaths
  • Cass County - 1,114, 455 recoveries, 39 deaths
  • Cherokee County - 2,218 , 853 recoveries, 67deaths
  • Franklin County -  480, 75 recoveries, 11 deaths
  • Gregg County -  6,044, 5,822 recoveries, 196 deaths
  • Harrison County - 2,326, 1,927 recoveries, 70 deaths
  • Henderson County - 3,825, 3,649 recoveries, 110 deaths
  • Hopkins County -  1,500, 149 recoveries, 60 deaths 
  • Houston County - 856, 299 recoveries, 17 deaths
  • Lamar County - 2,787, 509 recoveries, 75 deaths
  • Marion County - 335, 342 recoveries, 20 deaths
  • Morris County - 562, 175 recoveries, 3 deaths
  • Nacogdoches County -  3,119, 1,750 recoveries, 89 deaths
  • Panola County - 937, 257 recoveries, 36 deaths
  • Polk County -   1,350, 680 recoveries, 43 deaths
  • Rains County - 397, 377 recoveries, 19 deaths
  • Rusk County -   2,088, 675 recoveries, 38 deaths
  • Sabine County - 275, 6 recoveries, 11 deaths
  • San Augustine County- 324, 154 recoveries, 19 deaths
  • Shelby County - 866, 351 recoveries, 37 deaths
  • Smith County - 11,428,11,461, 10,834 recoveries, 287 deaths
  • Titus County -  2,642, 1,282 recoveries, 42 deaths
  • Trinity County - 468, 445 recoveries, 9 deaths
  • Upshur County -  1,277, 436 recoveries, 24 deaths
  • Van Zandt County - 2,582, 2,450 recoveries, 69 deaths
  • Wood County - 1,948, 1,821 recoveries, 82 deaths

Numbers are determined by respective county officials and the Texas Department of State Health Services.

The CDC recommends the following to help protect yourself:

  1. Washing hands 
  2. Avoid close contact
  3. Distance self between other people
  4. Stay home
  5. Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing
  6. Throw away used tissues
