Governor Abbott continues holiday tradition delivering for Meals on Wheels

Gov. Greg Abbott and First Lady Cecilia were among the many volunteers who helped Meals on Wheels Central Texas provide a Thanksgiving supper to those in need.

A hot meal on Thanksgiving doesn't always come easy, that's why Meals on Wheels Central Texas has a fleet of drivers dedicated to deliver holiday plates to home-bound seniors.

Volunteers packed and delivered over 450 plates filled with turkey, dressing and veggies to Austin-area seniors, a couple of those volunteers were Governor Greg Abbott and First Lady Cecilia Abbott.

For years, they've been delivering meals as part of their holiday tradition, this time around, they delivered to Audria Price in East Austin. It was her first Thanksgiving meal through the program.

“Oh, there’s a lot of people that don't have transportation, they don't have family and they don't have the means -- like, you know, money -- to go grocery shopping, so I'm just blessed,” Price said.

Governor Abbott said no matter what circumstances a person may be in, he hopes a traditional Thanksgiving meal with family can make their day a little brighter.

“It was so great to see Audria here and the smile on her face, to be able to see that people care about her. One thing about Thanksgiving: it's a time for the community to come together, for all of us to be thankful for the blessings that we have in this country,” Governor Abbott said.

About 5,000 seniors are served through the Central Texas Meals on Wheels program. To find volunteer opportunities, click here.
