Ector County ISD Settles Bible Curriculum Lawsuit

ODESSA - The Ector County Independent School District has settled a lawsuit with the American Civil Liberties Union over its controversial Bible curriculum.

That settlement was announced this afternoon at a special school board meeting.

ECISD released the details of their settlement with the ACLU. The agreement includes the following points:

  • A committee will be formed by the ECISD staff to develop an original curriculum to teach the Bible course.
  • The primary text for the curriculum will be a parallel translation Bible or multi-translation Bible that uses more than one translation for side by side comparison.
  • A monitoring system will be put in place to ensure laws are followed.
  • The curriculum will be open to the public.

The American Civil Liberties Union has fought the school district's plans for a religious based election course for the past nine months.
