HOBBS, NM - "He could be about to burn food and you could go ask him to take the trash out and he would do it. It was just him. He was like the nicest kid you could ever meet; always laughing, always giving big 'ol hugs when you see him," Kayleen Valdez said.

Just one day after losing her friend, Valdez is remembering the good times she had with her coworker, Jose Calvillo, who was a cook at a local Buffalo Wild Wings.

The 16-year-old was shot early Saturday morning in the 500 block of Sanger in Hobbs, N.M. Police found Calvillo suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Lea Regional Medical Center but later died.

Valdez saw him the same night as the shooting, just hours before, but didn't think that would be the last time she talked to him.

Although there are not many details on the case just yet, Valdez says she wishes people would stop arguing about it.

"I just wish everybody would quit blaming his family and stuff for it and just be there for him because it's a really hard time, I mean it's nobody's fault," Valdez said.

Most of his coworkers were too distraught to talk about what happened but they say he was a calm, fun-loving kid and no one ever expected anything like this to happen.

"I mean, everybody wants to go out at that age, like no matter if they're in high school. There was minors there and it's probably not right but I'm just saying like, no matter what, we should just think positive about it and be what he would want," Valdez said.
