Caught on Cam: Men impersonate officer, steal $6,000

It's the first of it's kind out of Odessa. The impersonation of a public servant that led to theft by the use of what's called a Comchek.

ODESSA, TX (KWES) - It's the first of its kind out of Odessa. The impersonation of a public servant that led to theft by the use of what's called a Comchek.

Comcheks are used by transportation companies as a financial instrument. Two men took advantage of the system and made off with nearly $6,000.

Back in January, two men called the owner of a trucking company claiming to be Odessa Police officers.

"They claimed his semi rig had been involved in a crash and they requested money in the form of a Comchek to be sent to remove the truck from the roadway," said Susan Rogers with Odessa Crime Stoppers.

Comcheks are very common in the transportation industry. They are a form of payment used by freight brokers to pay contract carriers. Comcheks can also be used to purchase fuel.

In this case, the impostors told the owner of the trucking company, a towing service is asking for payment for services before the truck is even moved.

So to take care of the issue, the owner cut two checks, gave the criminals an authorization number and went on about his business, trusting these two so called police officers.

"He sent two different checks of nearly $6,000 to the Flying J Pilot Truck stop here," said Rogers. "The video we have is the two suspects cashing those checks at the truck stop."

The two will be charged with theft and impersonating a public servant.

"There are two suspects, they're both black males," said Rogers. "The first suspect has a black hoodie over his face, you don't really see his face very clearly, but you do see him sign the check. The second male has a black ball cap on with a tan bill, but you can see his face."

If you have any information of the whereabouts of these thieving impostors, give Odessa Crime Stoppers a call at (432) 333-TIPS. You will remain anonymous and could land yourself a cash reward.
