AUSTIN -- Austin police announced Thursday evening the suspension of Commander Stephen Deaton for three days, citing inappropriate comments he made during a meeting in June.

According to a disciplinary memo released by the city, Deaton made the comments to other police commanders and lieutenants regarding a recent disciplinary action. Deaton discussed his decision to send the case to internal affairs while serving as Assistant Chief.

The comments, according to the memo, broke the department's policy on Impartial Attitude and Courtesy.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo suspended Deaton three days, effective Nov. 14 through Nov. 16, 2014.

Department policy states that an officer suspended three days or less can choose to use holiday or vacation time to serve the suspension. Any officer suspended three days or less is also allowed to appeal the suspension.
