MIDLAND - Here in Texas, we think of ourselves as friendly. In fact, the official state motto is "Friendship," it was adopted 80 years ago. But things have changed especially in West Texas. Our population boom could have something to do with it.

If you think people aren't as friendly as they used to be, you're probably right.

"Hell no, let me rephrase that no," one person said.

"People are really rude in Texas, so rude, they ignore you," another person said.

"The ones from Texas, pretty cool," another person said.

There are mixed emotions on whether Texans are friendly or not, what has happened to our friendliness that we are suppose to be known for? According to Colleen McLane, who teaches etiquette and manners at Midland Classical Academy, we are currently going through a transitional period.

"We are experiencing some growing pains. Our economy is being invigorated by all these people coming in and we have jobs available and so it kinda brings a blessing and a curse," McLane said.

She mentioned the importance of manners and etiquette that are not being taught and at the same time we are not being considerate of other people.

"I think it's an opportunity for us to make a decision that another person's time is just as important as my time," McLane said.

Raul Pantoja says rude people are everywhere except his state.

"I mean you get people like that everywhere, you can't say they are all nice, just like everywhere else. The only place you can find people that are nice is in California," Pantoja said.

According to C.W., who is from north Carolina, he has no problems with people from Texas. As a matter of fact, he believes he knows who is to blame for the rude people in the state.

"The people from northeastern United States that come here, they use their new York attitude, that gets on my nerves but of the people from Texas are friendly that I have met," C.W. said.

Jonathan Mesa, who is a Texas resident, has a whole different view. Mesa says Texas isn't a friendly state.
