Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine: Phase 1B of COVID-19 vaccinations, including people 65 and older and school staff, should start in 2 weeks

At his press briefing on Tuesday, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said he expects Phase 1B of the state's COVID-19 vaccination plan to begin in two weeks.

On Dec. 23, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced which groups will be included in the next phase of the state's coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination plan.

It appears the state is getting close to beginning that next phase.

At his press briefing on Tuesday, Gov. DeWine laid out how Ohio has prioritized who will initially be receiving the vaccine. In doing so, he revealed that Phase 1B -- which includes adults 65 years or older, those with developmental disorders including Sickle Cell or down syndrome and all teachers and staff at K-12 schools planning to reopen for in-person learning -- will begin in approximately two weeks.

"We hope in approximately two weeks from now to be starting in on this 1B group," DeWine said, noting that the timeframe is dependant on how much of the vaccine and how quickly Ohio can receive it from the federal government.

Currently, Ohio remains in the midst of Phase 1A of its COVID-19 vaccine distribution, which includes healthcare workers and personnel who are routinely involved in the care of coronavirus patients, residents and staff at nursing homes, residents and staff at assisted living facilities, patients and staff at state psychiatric hospitals, people with developmental disabilities and those with mental health disorders, including substance use disorders, who live in group homes, residential facilities, or centers and staff at those locations, residents and staff at Ohio veterans homes and EMS responders.

According to Gov. DeWine, Phase 1A includes approximately one million people. It will remain ongoing as needed as Phase 1B begins.
