BREWSTER COUNTY, TX (KWES) - Brewster County Judge Eleazar Cano has been issued a public warning in reference to his endorsement of a Texas Representative and his campaign.

Upon review, the State Commission on Judicial Conduct found that Judge Cano violated Canon 5(2) and Canon 2B of the Texas Code of Judicial Conduct.

A review of allegations against Cano showed that he sent out invitations to a “Cinco de Mayo Fiesta” in Alpine which was paid for by the Roland Gutierrez Campaign.

At the time, Gutierrez was campaigning to represent District 19 in the Texas Senate.

Cano said that Gutierrez wanted to introduce himself to the local community and reached out to him for assistance with coordinating the event.

Cano also stated that his assistance was limited to contacting a caterer and another “local business owner” to help run the event and introducing Gutierrez at the event itself.

Canon 5(2) states that a judge “shall not authorize the public use of his or her name endorsing another candidate for any public office, except that either may indicate support for a political party.”

Additionally, Canon 2B states that “a judge shall not lend the prestige of judicial office to advance the private interests of the judge or others.”
