AUSTIN, TX (KWES) - House Bill 902 was unanimously passed in the Texas House of Representatives on April 17.
The law, authored by State Representative Brooks Landgraf, is aimed at making it a felony to assault a pregnant woman.
This would be a big change from the current state law, which only designates the crime as a class A misdemeanor.
As a third degree felony, if the person committing the assault knew the woman was pregnant they could wind up with two to ten years in prison.
The bill still has a ways to go before becoming a law. It will now be sent to the Texas Senate, and if it passes Governor Greg Abbott would have to give final approval.
If the law is passed, it would take effect in September of 2019.
