ODESSA - A way of having a piece of the American dream is buying your own home, but how deviating it is when all that is taken away because of a fire. Although an insurance policy can't stop your home from burning down, you can have some form of security.

"I have heard that some people are making calls so what I have been advising people is to make sure that they get in contact with their insurance company as soon as possible and review what kind overages they have. It will help them understand if anything does happen, they know what they are covered for," Filberto Gonzales with Odessa State Farm Insurance said.

He says for people living in the Ft. Davis area and don't have home insurance they will more than likely not be eligible for a policy because they are close to the danger.

"With our company, you know because we have a moral obligation to protect our policy holders and things like that. We will try and help them as much as we can but we are not going be able especially if they live in that vicinity where the fire is and everything else," Gonzales said.

Gonzales mentioned no matter when you get your policy, you're covered immediately.

"In my opinion, the insurance company has to make that call, and say 'ok we have to cut it off here' but if they call and they get insurance today for whatever reason and then tomorrow there is a wildfire they are protected. There is nothing wrong with that," Gonzales said.

Gonzales advises to anyone wanting to purchase home insurance that they should do their homework before they commit themselves to a particular insurance company.
