Texas drivers will pay more at the pump for the Fourth of July travel holiday than last year: AAA report

If you are ready to go on your road trip for the 4th of July, you might want to prepare for higher prices.

TEXAS, USA — Texas drivers are paying 87 cents more per gallon compared to this time last year, as reported by the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.

Around this time last year, the average for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel was $1.88. Today, the price is $2.75, according to AAA.

AAA Texas spokesperson Daniel Armbruster said drivers can anticipate prices to be more expensive, "especially as more Texans than ever are projected to travel by car to their Independence Day destinations.”

Out of all major metropolitan areas, El Paso is paying the highest price. Today, drivers in El Paso are paying an average of $3.08, while San Antonio drivers are paying the lowest at $2.65.

Today, the average gas price in Dallas is at $2.81, and for Forth Worth-Arlington it is $2.79. Gas price averages for Houston and Austin are lower at $2.70, according to gasprices.aaa.com.

However, Texas has some of the cheapest gas prices compared to the national average. Texas ranks in third place for lowest gas prices in the country, per AAA estimates. Louisiana is the first, followed by Mississippi.

Around this time last year, the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded was $2.16. Today the price is estimated to be 92 cents higher, at $3.08.

AAA also cited data from the Energy Information Administration that explained that the U.S. gasoline demand increased from the week prior to June 18. As the demand goes up, crude oil prices also have increased, which they determined is likely to be the cause for higher pump prices in the next weeks.
