Gov. Abbott visits Abilene to share remarks at Great Lakes Cheese Facility construction site

As development of the Great Lakes Cheese Facility continues, Gov. Abbott expressed his excitement for more economic development in Abilene.

ABILENE, Texas — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott held a press conference Monday at the construction site of the new Great Lakes Cheese (GLC) packaging and distribution facility in Abilene.

While there, Abbott explained how the new development will bring economic growth for people in Abilene and West Texas as a whole.

“Great Lakes Cheese is part of the Texas economic juggernaut. Every year that I've been Governor, Texas has been Number One state in the United States for business. Every year that I've been governor, Texas has received the award for the most new economic developments projects,” Abbott said.

The governor also presented GLC with a signed proclamation and Texas flag to officially welcome the company to the Lone Star State.

Abilene Mayor Anthony Williams, GLC Board Chairman Heidi Eller and the Office of the Governor's Economic Development and Tourism Executive Director Adriana Cruz were also in attendance at the press conference.

“We thank our governor for his leadership and belief in Texas and Abilene. It’s always great to be a Texan, and also great to be an Abilenian,” Williams said at the press conference.

Williams also said this new development will bring almost $3.5 billion to Abilene over the span of 10 years and is expected to bring 510 jobs to the Big Country.

Great Lakes Cheese’s new facility will be one of the largest economic development projects in Abilene in decades.

"This is going to be part of the economic development projects that we were able to achieve throughout the state of Texas. We're in this together," Abbott said.

The Great Lakes Cheese site is expected to be finished with construction by November 2022.
