GAINES COUNTY - Gaines County voters will decide on whether or not they get a new jail.

It's been an issue dividing Gaines County voters for several months.

But in the last commissioners court meeting, a unanimous vote put the jail on the May ballot.

That project, if approved, will cost the county about 15.5 million dollars, up about 1.5 million dollars.

Officials say the current jail has been so overcrowded, they've sent inmates to other counties, which is also costing taxpayers lots of money.

This past year, the county saw the highest number of bookings ever at 900 during 2008.
