MCCAMEY - Authorities say it all started with a car accident around 13th street and Annis.

It ended late Friday night at the McCamey hospital.

Sheriff Dan Brown says 59-year-old James Michael Hicks crashed into another car just before 7 Friday evening then suddenly fled on foot.

After hearing reports of shots fired, Upton County deputies surrounded a nearby house where Hicks holed up.

Authorities surrounded the home and called the Midland S.W.A.T. team in for backup.

Some nearby homeowners were asked to evacuate.

Deputies called-off authorities after finding Hicks dead in the backyard.

He was transported to McCamey hospital where he was pronounced dead just before 11 on Friday night.

Authorities are still trying to figure out why Hicks apparently shot himself.

Sheriff Brown says the suspect was out on parole.
No one else was hurt.
