Pecos city crews have been working around the clock since the wind storm hit on Tuesday afternoon. Reeves and Pecos counties, Fort Stockton, and Balmorhea all sent EMS crews.
Officials say people in town took heed of the warnings. There were only minor injuries reported, but the accident on Interstate 10 resulted in a 15 car pile up with one fatality.
"We're a close knit area out here," Joe Tallott, with Pecos EMS said. "We all help each other out when we have situations like that. Everybody responded really well to what could have been a really bad situation."
The 66 mph winds damaged a quarter of the homes and businesses in town.
Officials tell NewsWest 9, it's going to be several weeks before homes and businesses can be repaired.
