GAINES COUNTY - It was an effort by Gaines County Commissioners to save money after sending inmates to other facilities, but a new jail will now cost the County even more.
After Gaines neighbors pushed for an election, the new jail project moved back to the May ballot and since that time, construction costs have escalated.
During Monday's Commissioner's Court meeting, County officials say the price is 1.5 million dollars more than the original jail price.
Now voters will decide on May 9th whether to begin construction for the 15 million dollar facility.
The County Judge tells NewsWest 9, the current jail has been so overcrowded, they've sent inmates to other counties costing taxpayers more and more each month.
