MARTIN COUNTY - More than eighty people were arrested on Saturday after Martin and Midland County Sheriff's responded to a call about illegal cockfighting.
When officials arrived at the scene, they found more than what they expected.
Officers arrived at the scene to find 10 dead roosters and several others brutally injured after an illegal cockfight, but there was more than just dead roosters.
"There was steroids and different drugs for the animals, but there was also quite a bit of narcotics for human use," Martin County Sheriff John Woodward, said.
"The cruelty to animals is enormous. There's 10 dead. We got some that are bleeding, we got another one that's about to die. It's a very sad situation," Midland County Sheriff Gary Painter said.
83 people including juveniles were arrested and transported to the Midland County Detention Center.
Thousands of dollars in cash along with numerous narcotics were also found at the scene.
No word yet on who is responsible for organizing the cockfight, but the land owner was taken into custody as well.
The U.S. Attorney's Office has been contacted and they are looking into a possible federal investigation.
