FedEx Plane Crashes at Lubbock Airport

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Two crew members from a FedEx cargo plane that crashed this morning in Lubbock are out of the hospital now.

The ATR-42 twin-turboprop aircraft crashed in a grassy area short of the runway during landing at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport before dawn today.  FedEx spokeswoman Sandra Munoz says both crew members were able to walk from the crash, which happened in a freezing mist.

Airport director James Loomis says he doesn't know if the weather was a factor in the crash. But visibility at the time of the crash was 2 miles and the ceiling was about 500 feet.

The plane was operated by Coeur d'Alene, Idaho-based Empire Airways under contract with Memphis, Tenn.-based FedEx Corp.
