Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy was wheeled out of the Capitol on a stretcher this afternoon after suddenly collapsing during the inaugural luncheon.
He was taken to the nearby Washington Hospital Center where he was reported to be awake and talking to doctors.
The senator appeared to be in fine health this morning as arrived at the inauguration ceremonies, and was beaming as he and his wife Vicky congratulated President Obama.
After Senator Kennedy was taken to the hospital the new President expressed his concern for his political ally.
A short time later fellow lawmakers remembered him in prayer.
The 76-year-old senator was diagnosed with brain cancer last May after falling ill at the Kennedy family compound.
He underwent surgery to remove as much of the cancer as possible.
The senator suffered a seizure back in September, but at the time doctors said that episode was a bad reaction to medication.
