MIDLAND - Tons of trash is not exactly the impression you want to give visitors coming to town. Especially with President Bush's visit just days away.
Crews cleaned up the illegal dumped garbage in December just east of the Visitor's Center off I-20. The area had heavier trash like tires and other debris. City Officals said just dumping all of that trash in a field is illegal and does have consequences. Keep Midland Beautiful estimates its cost about $20,000 dollars to clean up the site.
"The whole community should care about it, taxpayer money is what cleans up illegal dump sites," Doreen Richardson, with Keep Midland Beautiful, said. "And if you have a friend or a neighbor that says, 'oh it's no big deal to just go ahead and take it down the road and dump it,' don't let them do it, because you'll end up paying for it in some way."
Thousands of people are expected to be in Midland Tuesday when President Bush and First Lady Laura come to town. Officals said they want the area to look nice, and are telling residents to dispose of your trash properly.
