Hobbs Man Pleads No Contest to Lesser Charges

HOBBS, N.M. (AP) - A 22-year-old man who faced a murder charge in a shooting in Hobbs has pleaded no contest to lesser charges.

Alex Tovar entered his plea earlier this month in state district court to conspiracy and tampering with evidence charges.  Sentencing is set for Jan. 12.

Tovar originally was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, tampering with evidence and shooting at or from a motor vehicle in the February death of 23-year-old Josh Barrientes after an argument at a party.

Another man, 21-year-old Jose Garcia, was convicted of manslaughter in October in Barrientes' death.
