MIDLAND--Someone else's mistake turned into a jackpot for Keep Midland Beautiful. A local company had to pay a fine for environmental violations. $63,000 of that money is going to Keep Midland Beautiful for a new project.
"It is such a great program to be able to have some of that fine money come back to the community and do some cleanup work," Doreen Richardson, with Keep Midland Beautiful, said.
Everyone has them somewhere in their home or garage, containers of household cleaners, pesticides and herbicides, with just a little bit left in the bottle.
According to Richardson, "People don't know what to do with it and they hear it's not supposed to go to the landfill, so some people will think, I've only got a little bit, so I'll just put it down the drain. That's where the problems begin with the water."
Now, thanks to Eco-Logical Environmental Services, there's a place where you can safely get rid of it all and keep it out of the landfills.
According to Waste Disposal Mgr, Anna Vargas, "This is a special project that we're doing. We've done some other projects that are lab waste disposal because they recieved a special grant for us to do these drives."
While the actual disposal doesn't happen on their site, Eco-Logical will make sure it gets done. "We send it to a disposal facility. There, they're going to either incinerate it or recycle the waste," explained Vargas.
Richardson says, this is a great alternative to pouring it down the drain or taking it to a landfill, where it will sit forever, "We believe if you make it easy for people to do the right thing, they'll do it. And this is so easy."
Vargas adds, just take your waste to Eco-Logical and they'll do the rest, "We'll unload it for them and everything, so they don't even have to do that. We'll just take it off their hands."
