Man Back in Clovis Jail After being Mistakenly Released

CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - A Texas man who was mistakenly released from a New Mexico jail in September is back in custody Friday after being arrested at a Clovis shelter.

Clovis Police Lt. Jim Schoeffel says 46-year-old Willie Windom was arrested without incident Thursday.  Windom had been serving a 12-year sentence in Texas when he was transferred to Clovis to face rape and incest charges in district court.

When those charges were dismissed, Windom was released from the Curry County jail rather than being returned to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to continue serving his sentence.

TDCJ spokesman Jason Clark says Windom is being held in the Curry County jail awaiting extradition back to Texas, where he had been held since February 2007.  Texas authorities discovered the mistaken release in a routine
